Senior Sarah Behrent of the Hilliard Davidson High School girls swimming team wondered who would be calling her at 11:30 p.m. Feb. 18 when her cellphone started ringing.

It turned out to be her teammate, senior Sara Byrd, with news that couldn’t wait until morning. Not only had Behrent secured an at-large berth in the 100-yard butterfly for the Division I state meet, but the 200 medley relay of junior Erin Brooks, freshman Felicia Fantin, Behrent and sophomore Megan Schmalenberger also had qualified.

The top two finishers in each swimming event in the district meet Feb. 18 at Ohio State qualified for the state meet, which will be held Friday, Feb. 24, and Saturday, Feb. 25, at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths were awarded for each swimming event based on district times statewide.

“Sara stayed up by the computer (studying the other districts’ results) and calculated it out,” said Behrent, who placed seventh in the 100 fly in a program-record 57.74 seconds at district. “It’s going to be so much better just to have that support system there (at state) and have everyone there cheer you on. I’m going to have a lot more friends to hang out with.”

Last season, Behrent finished 23rd (59.69) in the 100 fly at state. The only other Hilliard swimmer to compete at state a year ago was Bradley senior Kaitlyn Goldsmith, who finished 22nd in the 50 freestyle (25.28) as a junior after finishing 24th (25.38) as a sophomore in 2010.

In addition to Behrent in the 100 fly and the Davidson girls 200 medley relay, Hilliard will be represented at state by Darby sophomore Hunter Cook, who made the boys meet in the 500 free and 200 individual medley.

Cook finished third in the 500 free in a program-record 4:42.36 and sixth in the 200 IM in 1:56.34. He is seeded 17th at state in the 200 IM and 20th in the 500 free.

Last season at district, Cook finished fourth in the 500 free (4:44.41) and had one of the top 24 times in the state meet but was denied a trip to state by an automatic qualifier.

“Last year kind of sucked, but it also motivated me,” he said. “It was definitely in the back of my mind the whole time.”

In the girls district meet, Davidson finished 15th with 51 points behind champion Upper Arlington (522), as Darby finished 21st (11) and Bradley came in 24th (7). In the boys meet, Darby finished 11th (85) behind champion UA (435), with Bradley finishing 21st (15).

The Davidson boys team did not have any district qualifiers.

Behrent is seeded 21st at state in the 100 fly behind defending champion Maddie Martin of Pickerington Central (54.72). Central Ohio had six swimmers receive at-large berths in the event.

The 200 medley relay, which coach Brian Dickmann believes is the first relay team from Hilliard to make it to state, finished seventh at district in a program-record 1:51.84 and is seeded 24th at state.

“A lot of us swam club together for a long time, so we were going, ‘Let’s do this. This is our final chance at everything,’” Behrent said.

Bradley, which moved up to Division I this season after competing in Division II the past two seasons, does not have any state qualifiers.

The Jaguars were led at district by Goldsmith, who finished 11th in the 50 free (25.21) and 16th in the 100 free (54.95), and sophomore Jon Satre, who was 11th in the 200 free (1:48.37) and ninth in the 500 free (4:55.20).

“Overall from top to bottom, we swam out of our minds,” said Dickmann, who coaches all three Hilliard programs. “We came in here, we were prepared and everyone swam very fast. I can’t be any happier.”

Jim Van Winkle hopes his Hilliard Darby High School boys basketball team got a shot of adrenaline heading into the Division I district tournament.

The Panthers rallied to defeat Hilliard Davidson 50-43 on Feb. 17 in the regular-season and OCC-Central Division finale.

“It definitely should be a big boost for us,” said the first-year coach, whose team finished the regular season 6-14 overall. “It was a nice win and the kids fought back for the win. They were pretty excited.”

Nic Baker and David Dennis both scored 12 points, Taylor Van Winkle had 10 points with three 3-pointers and Bryson Hook and Clay Schmidt added six points apiece.

“We cut our deficit to 10 (points) in the third quarter and cut it to five to start the fourth,” coach Van Winkle said “We chipped away and made the plays we needed to make and were able to switch our man and zone defenses to keep them off-balance. It was a great team win.”

Darby opens district competition with a first-round game against a familiar opponent: OCC-Central rival Worthington Kilbourne. The Wolves swept the regular-season series, winning 53-44 on Dec. 6 and 58-40 on Jan. 20. The third meeting will be at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Reynoldsburg.

“You know what to expect from them,” coach Van Winkle said of Kilbourne, which enters the game at 11-9. “We know their personnel and we know their tendencies. It’s not like something that we won’t be used to seeing and that helps some with the mental aspect of the game.”

Darby went 3-11 in the OCC-Central to finish seventh behind champion Upper Arlington (12-2), Dublin Coffman and Thomas Worthington (both 9-5), Kilbourne and Westland (both 8-6) and Davidson (7-7). Central Crossing went 0-14.

Against Kilbourne on Dec. 6, Hook scored 15 points, Taylor Van Winkle had 11 and Schmidt added 10.

Brian Hanks led the Wolves with 17 points and Connor Dahn scored 11.

Schmidt had 10 points and Taylor Van Winkle added nine in the second meeting. Hanks had 21 points, Dahn scored 12 and Tyler Stern-Tucker added 10 for Kilbourne.

The first-round winner plays second-seeded Walnut Ridge or Whetstone in the second round at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, at Reynoldsburg. Darby did not play either team this season.

City League runner-up Walnut Ridge is 18-1 overall and ranked fifth in the state behind top-ranked and top-seeded Northland. Whetstone is 5-15.

The winner plays Briggs, seventh-seeded UA or 12th-seeded Mount Vernon in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. March 7 at Reynoldsburg.

•The girls team opened the Division I district tournament with a 43-39 win over Dublin Scioto on Feb. 14 at Olentangy Orange to improve to 8-13 overall.

The Panthers advanced to play ninth-seeded Watterson in the second round Feb. 22. The winner plays top-seeded and top-ranked Reynoldsburg or Franklin Heights in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. March 1 at Orange.

Darby trailed 34-27 after three quarters against Scioto, prompting coach Liz Van Winkle to issue a challenge to her players. The Panthers limited the Irish to five points in the final eight minutes and senior Annie Hilditch hit two 3-pointers to spark the offense.

“Coach kind of ripped us,” Hilditch said. “Talking to the seniors, she said, ‘Do you want to go out like this?’ We fought back, dug deep and got the win.”

Junior guard Katie Esposito was in a familiar situation for the Panthers. On Feb. 10, Esposito made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Westland 45-42 in the regular-season finale. Four days later, she stood at the foul line with her team nursing a two-point lead with 12.3 seconds to play.

She hit both free throws to secure the victory.

“I try not to think about it,” Esposito said about clutch situations. “It would just be working myself up.

“(Making the 3-pointer to beat Westland) definitely helped my confidence. It helped me when I went to the foul line this time.”

Hilditch scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Emily Krumpe had 12 points with eight rebounds, Bri Rispress scored seven points with eight rebounds and Esposito had five points.

 HILLIARD, Ohio –

Hilliard is holding a public forum Wednesdsay night to discuss neighborhood and business safety after a string of recent armed robberies spread across western Franklin County.

At least three Hilliard businesses and one neighbor were alledgedly robbed by Christopher Blaho during January and February. The forum was planned before Blaho’s arrest and alleged confession to those crimes.

“I feel safer knowing this guy has been arrested, it does bring some relief,” said Andrew Wilson.

Wilson was working on the evening of January 25, when Blaho allegedly told detectives he robbed that restaurant.

The theme of the public meeting is “lessons learned” said Chief Doug Francis, Hilliard Police. Francis said people made some mistakes while reporting the latest string of armed robberies. “We will focus on personal and business safety, crime prevention, alarms, video surveillance and a question and answer period,” he said.

NBC4 asked the owner of Starliner Diner about whether she has safety concerns.

“Always,” said owner Molly Davis.

Starliner was alledgedly robbed by Blaho on January 18 at closing time.

“If employees are leaving at 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. … that is a concern,” Davis said. “I’ve talked to everyone about leaving together.”

“I feel like we are in the clear now since Blaho’s arrest” said Jeff Cox, manager of the Hilliard Subway on 4490 Cemetery Road.

Both Davis and Cox said job requirements will prevent them from attending the safety meeting.

The meeting was scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Safety Services Building at 5171 Northwest Parkway.

Letters arriving at Salt Spring homes this week will contain the welcome and long-awaited news that broadband internet service is finally available along Beaver Point Road and other small roads in the south end.

“As of today the plant is active,” said Shaw Communications’ sales manager for the Gulf Islands, Gord Snell, last Friday.

“Around 350 addresses have been identified as those we can offer access to full broadband service in the Beaver Point area.”

Snell said people living close to the road with easy access to communication lines are those who will be receiving offers of service this week. A number of other households, located further back on properties or on some of the intersecting side roads, will need further work involving hydro poles. Those residents should be able to sign up for service in two to three weeks.

“That’s probably the best news story for the south end,” said Ken Lee, a south end internet activist who moved to Brinkworthy near Ganges before his efforts paid off.

“We called it dial-up purgatory — your kid would come home from school and Google something and your phone service would be disconnected for two hours. So I’m so glad. I’m so happy for those people.”

The new service covers the area heading west from the Fulford Inn and extends all the way to Ruckle Park. Snell said Shaw is currently studying the feasibility of connecting Isabella Point, with hopes of installing the necessary infrastructure in the next year.

Roland Road residents already have access to Telus high-speed service.

The project comes as the result of a longstanding campaign Lee initiated in 2006 as president of the South Salt Spring Property Owners and Residents Association. Lee set up a petition at Patterson’s store and sent the results to both Telus and Shaw.

Shaw responded to the interest by mapping the area and calculating the cost of wires and poles, but determined at an estimated $700,000 the expansion would be too expensive to recover costs.

Lee said he had given up when he learned about Broadband Canada’s Connecting Rural Canadians Program in 2008. The $225-million program was intended to expand broadband coverage across the country within three years.

Lee and south-end neighbour Ashley Hilliard spearheaded a new petition asking then-MP Gary Lunn for help in securing the government funding. Lunn announced in 2009 that the campaign for a private/public partnership with Shaw was successful.

The completion date to qualify for funding was set at December 2011. Snell said Shaw applied for an extension to finish testing its new infrastructure.

INDIANAPOLIS -

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is ready to get moving on a new mixed-use development just north of its campus on the site of the former Winona Hospital.

Seven developers submitted proposals to develop the site. The museum will select the winning proposal March 1. The museum’s conceptual site plan for the five-acre site shows a mix of housing, commercial development and a two-and-a-half acre park.

Specifically, it calls for a minimum of 25 affordable units in 3-4 story apartment houses, town homes or a mix of both. The commercial component calls for approximately 22,000 square feet of space along Meridian Street with a “comprehensive parking solution.”

Mike Higbee with DC Development Group said his company sees “a lot of potential.”

The plan he submitted calls for 50 affordable housing units in phase one, built and leased by the end of 2013, which was a prerequisite of the museum.

“Phase two assumes a mixed use project, bringing the market back to the site as well as the affordable housing. It would be very nicely designed, very green,” Higbee said.

Higbee’s plan also calls for an “indoor community space that fronts on the park and would be there for new residents and existing neighbors too.”

He estimates the investment at $22 million with a 4-5 year build-out.

Higbee’s company has done several other urban projects. It’s currently behind the redevelopment of the old Central State Hospital site off West Washington Street.

Fishers-based Meyer Najem-Axia Urban also responded to the museum’s request for proposals (RFP). Thomas Peck said his firm didn’t submit a specific plan, but the qualifications to “design and build what the Children’s Museum wants to see” on that site.

Peck said, given that the office market isn’t that strong, they suggested the museum consider a charter school in the space proposed for commercial development. He estimated the price of a mixed-use development at $6-10 million.

Carmel-based Scott-Hilliard Kosene also submitted a proposal.

“Because of its mid-town location and proximity to the museum and, really, access to the Meridian corridor, it’s a great site for residential,” Stephen Scott said.

Scott said his plan called for 75-120 residential units noting “urban sites dictate higher density.”

As for the remaining site, Scott said while “retail is tricky in this environment…there is an appetite for it,” particularly in neighboring Meridian Park and Fall Creek Place where he says residents would be “very supportive.”

Others responding to the RFP include Carmel-based Pedcor Investments, Sexton Companies and the Whitsett Group, both in Indianapolis and The Community Builders, which is headquartered in Chicago.

While David Block with Community Builders declined to share his plan, he said they are “very interested. This is an intriguing opportunity.” He also noted his company has built 700 residential units in Indiana over the past eight years.

The city, which still owns the Winona property, has requested a zoning change to allow for housing on the site. The Metropolitan Development Commission Hearing Examiner will hear that case Thursday.

The city is expected to transfer title of the property to the Children’s Museum in the coming weeks. The city took ownership of the former Winona Hospital in a tax sale last year, using $1.2 million in HUD money to demolish the hospital and remediate the site.

Previous version

The City of Indianapolis will seek a rezoning request from city planners Thursday to pursue a housing development at the former Winona Hospital site on Meridian Street.

The housing development is a component of a mixed use plan offered by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Plans call for at least 25 affordable housing units, commercial development along Meridian Street and a two-and-a-half-acre park.

Seven developers have submitted proposals, and the Children’s Museum expects to make a decision next week.

The hospital sat vacant for seven years after going bankrupt and rapidly became an eyesore in the neighborhood, attracting graffiti and vandalism.

A portion of an $8 million grant from Housing and Urban Development paid for demolition in October 2011.

The Children’s Museum plans to choose a developer by March 1st.

See the plans.

As much as the Ohio State men’s tennis team would like to, they just can’t win them all.

The No. 3-ranked squad in the country fell to No. 1-ranked University of Southern California, 4-3, in the championship match of the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship on Monday in Charlottesville, Va. The match marked the first loss for OSU (12-1) this season.

“It’s not an easy loss to swallow, especially when it’s that close,” said senior Chase Buchanan.

Sophomore Blaz Rola led the Buckeyes by defeating 18th-ranked sophomore Ray Sarmiento to tie the score at 3-3 after a win against freshman Yannick Hanfmann and senior Steve Johnson in doubles action.

The singles match between Hanfmann and redshirt junior Devin McCarthy would break the tie and declare a title winner. McCarthy won the first set, 6-3, but fell in the next two, 6-3 and 6-4.

Despite the loss, the team still holds a 74-3 record in regular season play.

The Buckeyes last saw USC in the NCAA Championship match on May 19, 2009, when the Trojans prevailed, 4-1.

“It hurts for two days and then we have to keep getting better and move on and get revenge at NCAAs,” Rola said.

OSU has never won a National Team Indoor Championship but has come close in previous years. In 2010, the Buckeyes advanced to the semifinals before losing to Virginia, and then again in 2011.

This year, OSU faced No. 2-ranked Virginia once more in the semifinals, defeating the Cavaliers, 4-1, Sunday and paving the way for the championship.

Rola and Buchanan, ranked first nationally as a pair, fell to senior Drew Courtney and junior Jarmere Jenkins, 9-8.

Buchanan and Rola agreed that playing Virginia was the most difficult part of the weekend.

“We played Virginia at Virginia with all of their fans at a tournament that they haven’t lost in four years,” Buchanan said. “Overcoming that hump was really big.”

The Buckeyes upset Virgina’s freshman Mitchell Frank, the country’s No. 1 singles player, when redshirt sophomore Peter Kobelt edged a 7-5, 7-6 victory. Kobelt handed Frank the first loss of his collegiate career.

In Saturday’s game against undefeated No. 6-ranked Kentucky, the Buckeyes tallied their ninth consecutive win against the Wildcats in a 4-3 match.

OSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, earning the doubles point and McCarthy’s victory against sophomore Alejandro Gomez, 6-2 and 6-4. Senior Wildcat Eric Quigley cut the lead in half by downing Buchanan.

The score tied at 2 after Kobelt fell. It tied again at 3 apiece following a singles win by junior Connor Smith (6-4, 6-4) and Rola’s loss against senior Alex Musialek (6-2, 6-4).

Kentucky’s sophomore Tom Jomby trailed sophomore Ille Van Engelen by 4 before coming back to tie the score, 5-5. Van Engelen battled Jomby back and forth before clenching the match for the Buckeyes with a 7-5 victory.

“That match had everything: injury timeouts, tight line calls, you name it,” Tucker said in a press release Saturday. “We got lucky there at the end, and we were fortunate to win the match.”

“We expected to win against Texas,” Rola said. “Kentucky we knew was going to be tough.”

OSU swept the No. 14-ranked Texas Longhorns on Friday in the first round of the tournament.

The Rola-Buchanan tandem team defeated freshman Soren Hess-Olesen and redshirt junior Alex Hilliard, 8-2. The Longhorns answered with an 8-3 win against McCarthy and Van Engelen.

The doubles point went to OSU after a tie-breaking matchup between Kobelt and Smith and Texas’s sophomore Sudanwa Sitaram and junior Daniel Whitehead ended 9-8.

McCarthy, Van Engelen and Rola all earned singles points to take the match, 4-0.

Buchanan said that after the USC match, Tucker wanted his team to focus on the games ahead and let the tough loss be a motivator.

“It’s a process,” Buchanan said. “We’ll keep working for it and we’ll get there.”

The Buckeyes return home to the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday to host Kentucky at 4 p.m. The match will come one week after OSU defeated the Wildcats in the quarterfinals.

Relays have been the strength of the St. Charles Preparatory School swimming team for several years, and that dominance continued in the Division I district meet that concluded Feb. 18 at Ohio State.

The Cardinals advanced all three relays to the state meet, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, through Saturday, Feb. 25, at Branin Natatorium in Canton.

“It’s been a long time since we haven’t had a relay qualify, but as of a week ago, we were looking at not having any of them qualify,” coach Geoff Gear said. “We had to have a really good (district) meet just to get them through.”

The top two individuals and relays in each district event automatically advanced to state. In addition, 16 at-large berths were awarded in each event based on times from all the district meets.

The 200-yard medley relay of senior Alex Kocher, senior Chris D’Angelo, senior Ryan Doyle and junior Carl Calcara is seeded 15th at state with a time of 1 minute, 43.1 seconds. The performance was good for fourth at district.

The 200 freestyle relay of Cogan, Doyle, Calcara and senior Will Grodesky is seeded 16th at state in 1:27.73, good for second at district.

The 400 free relay of Cogan, Kocher, senior Jordan Krumpelman and senior Zach Poltor will be the 12th seed at state after finishing second at district in 1:27.73.

“It’s pretty exciting. This is my second year going (to state),” Poltor said. “It’s really a great atmosphere and I am looking forward to it. It’s really easy to swim fast there because everyone is so excited.”

Junior Nick McKinley advanced in two individual events — the 200 individual medley (1:55.83, 13th state seed) and the 100 breaststroke (58.93, 16th). Cogan also qualified in the 200 IM (1:55.83, 12th).

“Historically at the state meet, if you go in and duplicate what you have done (at district), you usually place pretty well,” Gear said. “A lot of kids tend to fall off (the) next week. You don’t even have to beat a third of the field to qualify for finals.”

At district, the Cardinals finished second (336.5) behind champion Upper Arlington (435).

Last year at state, St. Charles finished 16th (52) of 47 teams that scored and Cincinnati St. Xavier (312) won the title.

•The wrestling team will have four competitors in the Division I district tournament Friday, Feb. 24, and Saturday, Feb. 25, at Hilliard Darby.

The top four in each weight class will advance to the state tournament March 1-3 at Ohio State.

Freshman Tim Rooney was the 120-pound champion Feb. 18 in a sectional at Central Crossing, where the Cardinals finished ninth (80) of 10 teams, as Dublin Coffman (196.5) won. The top four in each weight class at sectional advanced.

Also moving on were junior Andrew Kyser (fourth, heavyweight), junior Dustin Obergfell (third, 138) and senior Adam Suhr (fourth, 126).

Rooney improved to 31-4 after defeating Grove City senior Jordan Shoemaker 6-2 in a sectional final.

“I knew I could shoot on him and since I was shorter than him, I used the ankle pick,” Rooney said. “Since I finished in first place that sets me up (at district) with a fourth-place wrestler from another (sectional), and that could make it easier in trying to reach state.”

Rooney opens district against Westerville North freshman Kevin Diaz (6-6), with a possible second-round match against Franklin Heights junior Brad Kakos (36-2) or Pickerington North junior Josh Snyder (19-15).

“Tim is a freshman and has been flying under the radar all year,” coach Joe Moyer said. “He has a lot of confidence and is successful because he loves what he’s doing. That smile he has isn’t a smirk. He genuinely loves being on the mat.”

Suhr (23-15) opens district against Delaware senior Seth McCurdy (42-4), and Obergfell (26-12) will face Lancaster freshman Tanner Miller (32-9). Kyser (12-19) faces Delaware senior Colton Christner (32-6) in the opening round.

“We were able to get four guys out and three of them are underclassmen, which bodes well for the future,” Moyer said. “I wish things would have worked out better for (145-pound senior) Lloyd (Furuta), who was fifth after recovering from a surgically repaired shoulder. That would have been nice if he could have moved on.”

•The bowling team advanced to the district tournament, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, at its home venue — HP Lanes.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament March 2 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

In a sectional Feb. 17 at Eastland Lanes, the Cardinals earned the program’s first district berth by finishing seventh (3,375) of 28 teams as the top nine teams and top nine individuals not on qualifying teams advanced.

Also moving on to district were Westerville South (3,916), Westerville Central (3,647), Groveport (3,647), Lancaster (3,624), Fisher Catholic (3,527), Granville (3,504), Buckeye Valley (3,330) and Marion Pleasant (3,307).

The Cardinals were led by junior Tom Cianflona with a 571 series, including a 246 game. His score was 10th behind medalist Kris Kasson (652) of Granville.

Junior Kyle Huston (487) was next for St. Charles followed by senior Zak Stephenson (474), senior Dez Brown (288, two games), junior Noah Thomas (285, two games) and senior Eric Powell (264, two games).

•The basketball team is 13-6 overall heading into its Division I district tournament opener against Zanesville at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Marysville.

The teams have not played this season. The Blue Devils finished the regular season 15-5.

The winner plays a second-round game at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, against Dresden Tri-Valley or Pickerington North at Marysville. The Cardinals have not played either team this season. Tri-Valley finished the regular season 12-8 and North was 11-9.

The second-round winner plays in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. March 7 at Marysville against top-seeded Northland, Central Crossing or Columbus West.

The Cardinals closed CCL play on Feb. 17, losing 45-32 to Hartley. Dan Hennessey, Michael Lutter and Jimmy Ryan all scored eight points.

Watterson (7-1) won the CCL title ahead of Hartley (6-2), St. Charles (4-4), DeSales (2-6) and Ready (1-7).

St. Charles closed the regular season with a 49-44 win Feb. 18 at Springfield Catholic Central. Hennessey scored 14 points, Ryan had 13 points with four 3-pointers and Gunner Francis added eight points.

LEWIS CENTER — Lancaster never could recover from a poor start.

The Golden Gales fell behind early and lost 54-31 to Hilliard Bradley in a Division I second-round game Tuesday at Olentangy Orange.

“Bradley shot lights out to start, and we didn’t,” Lancaster coach Sarah Chevalier said. “We missed our first four or five shots, which is frustrating. I think sometimes the kids feel that frustration, but they gotta keep going, gotta keep shooting.”

The Gales (10-11) shot more than 20 3-pointers for the game and were 3-of-17 from beyond the arc in the second half.

The shot selection was far from what Chevalier expected and different from what made Lancaster successful this season.

Senior Kellie Arter had 10 points to lead the Gales in the final game of her career, as she was one of Lancaster’s four seniors. The Gales had trouble stopping the Jaguars in the post in the second half, as Jasmine Junkins and Ashley Hummel combined for 12 of Bradley’s 24 points after halftime.

The duo took advantage of a significant size advantage against Lancaster. The Gales also started trapping guard Brooke Espenschied, who scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.

Despite the loss, Lancaster finished with 10 wins for the first time in Chevalier’s three years. The team has improved every year, and Chevalier hopes that will continue.

“Spring and summer is gonna be huge for us,” Chevalier said. “Who’s going to be there? Who’s going to step up for us? A lot of it is gonna rely on our young kids.”

TWIN FALLS • A 25-year-old Twin Falls man was sentenced on two
counts of possession of a controlled substance Tuesday in Twin
Falls County 5th District Court.

Ryan Phillip Hilliard was sentenced to three to seven years in
prison, which he must serve if he doesn’t successfully complete the
state’s retained-jurisdiction treatment program.

Hilliard’s attorney said Hilliard freely admits he has a
substance abuse problem that he developed after a workplace
injury.

Hilliard pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance
in December in exchange for the state dismissing two counts of
delivery of a controlled substance. Hilliard was found in
possession of heroin and was accused of selling oxycodone after he
was arrested by police in July after a sting operation.

Since his arrest, Hilliard said he has stayed out of trouble and
away from drugs.

“I’ve started to get back with my family, I have a child on the
way,” he said. “This arrest has given me a lot more than it’s taken
away.”

Tammy Hilliard, his mother, said at the sentencing that she had
been estranged since her son’s arrest.

“I have unconditional love, but it’s not a blind love,” she
said, adding her son had made good progress but was still in
recovery.

Judge Richard Bevan said he appreciated everyone speaking about
the rehabilitation aspect of the sentencing, but he also considers
punishment, fairness and deterring others in his sentence.

For those reasons, Bevan said he would not let Hilliard go with
probation. Rather, he must complete an intense treatment program
within the state correctional system.

“I take you at your word that you’ll do well,” Bevan said.

LEWIS CENTER — Lancaster could never recover from a poor start.

The Golden Gales fell behind early and lost 54-31 to Hilliard Bradley in a Division I second round girls basketball game Tuesday at Olentangy Orange High School.

“Bradley shot lights out to start, and we didn’t,” Gales’ coach Sarah Chevalier said.

The shot selection was far from what Chevalier expected and different from what made the Gales successful this season.

Senior Kellie Arter had 10 points to lead the Gales in the final game of her career, as she was one of Lancaster’s four seniors. The Gales had trouble stopping Hilliard Bradley in the post in the second half, as Jasmine Junkins and Ashley Hummel combined for 12 of Bradley’s 24 points after the break.

The duo took advantage of a significant size advantage over Lancaster. The Gales also started trapping guard Brooke Espenschied, who scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.

Despite the loss, the Gales finished with 10 wins for the first time in Chevalier’s three years with the Gales. The team has improved every year, and Chevalier hopes that will continue.

“Spring and summer is gonna be huge for us,” Chevalier said. “Who’s going to be there? Who’s going to step up for us? A lot of it is gonna rely on our young kids.”

Earlier in the season Hilliard Davidson girls basketball coach Joy Taylor may have watched her team lose the type of game it found a way to win Thursday, Feb. 16, during the first round of the Division I district tournament.

The Wildcats (11-10) took a big halftime lead against Westerville South in a game played at Pickerington Central, watched it nearly disappear in the third quarter, but found a way to get the job done in a 51-38 victory.

The win advanced Davidson into the tournament’s second round where it will meet No. 12 seed Zanesville Wednesday, Feb. 22 (6 p.m.), also at Pickerington Central.

“We’ve struggled with playing with the lead all season long,” Taylor said. “Earlier in the year we may not have won the game, but I think it shows how much we’ve matured.”

Davidson led 15-4 after one quarter and took a commanding 27-9 advantage to the locker room at the half. But South made a serious run in the third quarter to get back into it, and closed to within three points.

Taylor didn’t think her team necessarily took its foot off the gas, but rather South played with more of a purpose realizing that its season could come to an end.

“I don’t think it was a lack of focus,” the coach said. “It’s the tournament; everyone is going to fight back. We talked at the half that they were probably going to bring a lot more pressure and they did.

“We didn’t necessarily handle it well. We took some quick shots when we probably should have slowed it down, but I was happy with the way we worked through it.”

Davidson once again gained control of the game early in the fourth quarter and pulled away for the win.

Lauren Bates and Bri Ekanem each scored 14 points, while Katie Dymek finished with 12.

The second-round matchup with Zanesville should be an interesting one, considering the Blue Devils are a smaller team and one that plays a style Davidson is accustomed to.

“From what I know all five of their players can handle the ball and play hard,” Taylor said. “They like to pressure full court and it’ll be a challenge for us.

“I think we match up well with them. We’ll actually have a height advantage inside and pretty much all year we’ve played as the smaller team. It should be a good game.”

The winner will advance to likely face No. 4 seed Northland in a D-I district semifinal March 1.

Swimming and diving

The Wildcats girls team scored 51 points at the D-I district meet held at Ohio State University Saturday, Feb. 18 and advanced a handful of athletes to this weekend’s state meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Senior Sarah Behrent placed seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (57.74) at the district, but her time was fast enough to earn her an at-large berth to the state meet.

She was also a member of the school’s 200 medley relay (1:51.84), which also finished seventh and earned the last state qualifying spot. Other members of the relay were senior Megan Schmalenberger, junior Erin Brooks and freshman Felicia Fantin.

Wrestling

The Wildcats scored 183 points at the D-I sectional tournament held at Marysville Feb. 18 and finished second to the host Monarchs.

Davidson did manage to advance eight wrestlers to the D-I district tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25, at Hilliard Darby.

Three sectional championships were earned by Davidson wrestlers Jake Davis (113), Chase Delande (152) and Alex Mickley (160).

Four others reached finals but were forced to settle for second-place finishes, they were Lee Wilson (126), Nick Lawter (132), Hannibal Tate (145) and Clay Kuszmaul (170). One other Wildcat, Trent Gill (106), placed fourth and also advanced to the district.

The top four placers in each weight class at the district meet will advance to the state meet at Ohio State March 1-3.

Hilliard was arrested Feb. 2 in connection with the killing last month of the 4-year-old dog.

On Jan. 11, the tiny canine, named “Chico,” wandered into a courtyard outside an apartment building in the 1100 block of East Lexington Avenue, near his owner’s home.

Seeing the animal, Hilliard, who was visiting friends at the complex, allegedly ran at the dog and kicked him. The canine was knocked into a fence, after which Hilliard allegedly kicked him several more times before picking him up and throwing him over the fence. The animal died at the scene.

After interviewing numerous neighbors, detectives identified Hilliard as the alleged attacker.

There was no indication that the animal, which frequently visited the complex and played with children who lived there, did anything to provoke the violence, authorities said.

Mandate does not hinder freedoms

I’m no constitutional law expert, but regarding “Evangelicals join birth control fight” (Feb. 21), doesn’t the Constitution protect employees of a religious organization from being required due to a religious tenet, to do such things as attending daily chapel, eating no red meat on Fridays or eating no pork products in the organization’s cafeteria, praying five times a day, or having only abstinence or natural birth control covered through the employer’s health insurance? Can an employer force even one such religious belief on its employees? – Hilliard Harper, Scripps Ranch

Put entire educational system online

In response to “Competition heats up for school tax measures” (Feb. 21): The voters would be right to reject all three tax increase measures for schools. Instead what should be done is to put the entire educational system online to greatly reduce costs and improve effectiveness. Every student should be connected and lecture and demonstration functions presented online, prepared by the very best teachers with a maximum emphasis of animated graphics for greatest clarity. Online interaction should be stressed.

Some recitation and laboratory functions could be still carried out at school sites but the number of teachers required could be significantly reduced. Many schools and universities already offer online diplomas/degrees such as Stanford and MIT. It’s time to put the whole system online and make it affordable and accessible to all. – John Suhr, La Mesa

Jacobs’ philanthropy praised

I read Diane Bell’s interview with Irwin Jacobs online (“Irwin Jacobs strives to make lives better,” utsandiego.com, Feb. 20) and was once again impressed at Jacobs’ generosity, as well as the reach of his philanthropy.

I was extremely disappointed, however, to see the barrage of hateful online comments directed at him for his support of Balboa Park. You may not agree with the proposal but it’s hardly cause to be so disrespectful.

I would like Jacobs to know that I am grateful for his support on many projects, including Balboa Park. I can’t wait to walk in Balboa Park without having to worry about crossing traffic, and to get rid of the constant noise caused by cars, trucks and buses. I’m happy that he is fighting to help make the park a park, once again! – Amy Baker Bridge, San Diego

Assessment district’s demise is neighborhood’s loss

In response to “Property owners’ money for special district may be refunded” (Local, Feb. 18): This indeed is a sad day for Golden Hill. A small group of shortsighted property owners have unfortunately forced the Greater Golden Hill Assessment District to be dissolved.

As a resident and property owner in Golden Hill for over 40 years, I have never been so proud of my neighborhood’s resurgences that has taken place over the past five years sparked by the accomplishments of the assessment district through its services such as litter removal, landscaping services and graffiti removal. At the very best, this misguided decision has stalled the progress of restoring Golden Hill to its once-held position as a crowned community of San Diego. – Barry Stinson, University Heights
